Therapeutic Ultrasound
What is Therapeutic Ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound is a modality that physiotherapists have used since the 1940s. Ultrasound is applied using the head of an ultrasound probe placed in direct contact with your skin via a transmission coupling gel. According to some studies, therapeutic ultrasound via an increase in local blood flow may help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation and, promote bone fracture healing. Your physiotherapist can adjust the intensity or power density of the ultrasound, depending on the desired effect. A higher power density (measured in watt/cm2) may soften or breakdown scar tissue.

Therapeutic ultrasound may increase:
- Healing rates
- Tissue relaxation
- Tissue heating
- Local blood flow
- Scar tissue breakdown
